Women’s History Month Series: Leslie George


March is Women’s History Month. All month long, we will be interviewing each of the talented, intelligent, and hardworking women of Milestone Consulting.

This week, we’re featuring Leslie George. Here’s what she had to say.

1. What is your position at Milestone? How long have you been there?

I was recently promoted to Director of Settlement Planning. What does that mean? I, along with the settlement consultant, will look at the complete picture of the client’s financial situation. Based on conversations with the family and their attorney, we as a team assess if the injured party would be best served using a trust (either Asset Protection, Settlement Preservation, or Special Needs) or some other solution. These trusts may include our wealth management platform or also contain future periodic payments either payable directly to the client as income or payable to their trust to preserve any needs-based government benefits.

No two cases are alike nor is any case too small. My primary goal is for our clients to understand the process and for them to feel comfortable in making what might be the biggest financial decision of their lives.

I’m a hands-on-type of person and love helping our clients and in the 8+ years since I’ve been working for John, many clients call me on my cell just to keep in touch. It’s especially wonderful to hear from clients who were injured as children or young adults and now are attending college, starting families, and managing their finances responsibly since they didn’t receive the entirety of their settlement monies at a young age.

2. Tell us something particularly unique about your life.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve lived in 6 different states (NY, GA, LA, FL, CO, and IL). I love that I’ve experienced different parts of the country and my husband and I are actually in the process of moving yet again, to Houston, TX. Knowing that my husband’s job requires relocation I approached John in 2011 to see if I could continue to work for the company but do it remotely. I am forever grateful that John, along with the rest of the team, had faith in the process and supported something that was not so common in 2011.

I’ve learned a lot about myself over the years; I typically seek out more information and I’ve become more resourceful since I work independently. I also naturally gravitate to picking up the phone instead of sending an email since this line of work is fast-paced and communication is extremely important, especially with complex subject matters. I’m also realizing that more and more people are working out of the typical office setting and other industries are seeing the benefits of remote staff.

Without this opportunity, I know I would not have been able to advance in my career and develop professionally. Audibles of life happen and I’m thankful every day that my Milestone family is a grounding influence on me during the chaos of life.

3. From your perspective, what are some of the main struggles women still face in the workforce, and how are professionals and businesses working to overcome them?

I would have to say that unfortunately, strong capable women are at times still seen as unlikable or too aggressive. It seems that some women in the workforce (and in general) have to walk the tightrope of female assertiveness. We can’t be too nice since that is considered weak nor can we speak too boldly since others may judge that as being hostile.

Women make up ½ of the workforce so it’s inevitable that all types of personalities will be present, just like with male colleagues. But what is noted is that women only make up a portion of executive positions in corporate America. Could a part of that be a woman can be more negatively criticized about her personality over a male counterpart? Could that criticism overshadow work performance or a possible promotion? I can’t say with certainty, but I do feel in my gut that it’s likely played a part for women for decades. However, I have hope now more than ever that we are on the cusp of something great. Technology, gaming, and manufacturing companies are now offering higher referral bonuses for women and minorities since these industries are underrepresented. It’s encouraging to see companies recruiting more strong capable women.

We are living in a newly recharged era; more women are demanding change, equal pay, speaking out about sexual harassment, and racial injustices. Plus more and more women are running for office. What I love about the Women’s Movements is that young children are able to see and hear from strong female voices without judgment. This is their normal. This is what they are growing up with and this is what they will want and expect from female co-workers and bosses.
