At Milestone Consulting, we assist many injured clients who remain heavily medicated for their pain long after their lawsuits have been resolved. For those who have been prescribed opioid drugs, the medication they depend on for relief can tragically come with a dangerous risk.

treatment for opioid addiction

Opioids include some prescription pain relievers like OxyContin (oxycodone), Vicodin (hydrocodone), codeine, and morphine. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, opioids are generally safe when prescribed by a physician and taken for a short time. However, their euphoric effect can cause some people to quickly become addicted to them.

The current opioid addiction epidemic is a nationwide problem. Law firms, scientists, and other professionals are taking the problem in their own hands to find solutions to protect people from the intense risk of opioids.

The law firm of Simmons Hanly Conroy filed lawsuits on behalf of two New York counties against pharmaceutical companies and physicians over their aggressive and fraudulent marketing of prescription opioids that has led to a drug epidemic in those counties. Earlier this year, the firm filed the complaints for Broome and Erie counties in the New York Supreme Court seeking relief for the millions of dollars spent annually to combat the deceptive marketing campaigns that misrepresent the safety of long-term opioid use. The lawsuits follow a 2016 suit filed by Simmons Hanly Conroy on behalf of Suffolk County, NY.

Some researchers are looking for ways to avoid the risk altogether. Chemist Gary Matyas is developing a vaccine to help heroin users quit using the drug. The vaccine would trick the immune system into treating the heroin chemical as a foreign invader, causing it to release antibodies that block the opioid from reaching the brain. If Matyas is successful in developing the vaccine, it could eventually help others stop using prescription opioids as well. STAT has explored this option and 11 other “game changers” that have the potential to slow the opioid epidemic.

Prescription opioid medication addiction not only deteriorates patients’ lives, but also the lives of their loved ones. If you know someone who is struggling with addiction, seek local treatment options right away. For many people, opioid addiction is impossible to stop without professional assistance, and it’s our job as family members and friends to lend help and support when it’s needed.
