Through my comprehensive settlement planning firm as well as through the Bairs Foundation and various community activities over the years, I have met thousands of families caring for people with special needs. Despite their loved ones’ range of injuries, needs, and disabilities, many parents and families have expressed one common and particular need: a community that offers support and advice from others in similar situations.

That’s why I am integrally involved with Parents Caring for Special Needs Kids, a Facebook community page where tens of thousands of families have joined together to share their experiences, support, and resources with each other.

Our world continues to marginalize adults and children with special needs. Mutual support is a critical element in combating and relieving the difficulties associated with these archaic stigmas. Thankfully, social media has become an accessible platform on which families can come together to help one another live their best lives. In addition to offering a space to comfortably discuss ideas, tell stories, and ask others for advice, the Parents Caring for Special Needs Kids Facebook community gives families ideas for increasing awareness and compassion in their communities and among the general public – something the world truly needs.
